The Heat Heather KilloughWalden Books

I have a hard time believing that a book was actually published with this many errors.
From missing words ("She told him that Lily had become a and sometimes worked herself ragged with horribly depressing cases.") to a complete ignorance of homonyms (who doesn't know the difference between brakes and breaks?), had I not been out of books, I would have stopped reading nearly immediately.
I understand that sometimes quantity is more important than quality, but aside from the numerous grammatical errors there were factual errors, as well. For instance, the heroine decides she needs to go out, so she takes a taxi to pick up her car, then drives to the local mall. Conveniently, when she is missing later, the hero tracks the taxi to the mall to find her. Um...
The story was mildly entertaining, though I felt the non consent and rape angle was a bit overdone.
I paid $1 for the book. It may have been worth that much, but just barely.

The Heat Heather KilloughWalden Books Reviews

No SPOILERS or plot summaries. Recommendations included.

HIGH LEVEL This is BOOK 1 in a paranormal romance series. Focus is on werewolves- not anything outrageously creative, but not your typical "finding your place in the pack" struggle either. The big thing about this book is that it is INTENSE- sexy, sure. Likable characters, yup. Decent plot, yeah, that too. But really, the major thing is that I spent the ENTIRE BOOK with my heart in my throat. I'm giving 5 stars because, while other books have been better examples of literature, this was a superb example of entertainment.

The magical world created isn't terribly complicated- the politics of being a werewolf in a world that believes you don't exist were reliably consistent with what you have probably already read, but very well done nonetheless and not OVER done. The struggle between the alpha males and each other and the female is a paramount theme throughout and said struggle was both heart breaking and satisfying.

The writing is clear and accessible. The settings were beautifully detailed. The pacing was break-neck. The seduction was devastating. The violence was brutal- be prepared for some serious violence against women. There were also one or two instances where foolish oversights were made by the characters (forgetting to leave a guard for your new mate??), but so much else was well done that I still have to give 5 stars.

The characters are well constructed- complicated and flawed enough that you will struggle with them at points. You will love them and then hate them and then hate that you love them. The strong female, Lily, is a solid character and while she goes through some pretty gruesome events, she is never a poor victim, if that makes sense. At no point did I feel she was stupid or weak, though I wanted to scream in rage on her behalf nearly the ENTIRE TIME.

WARNING Yes, as other readers have mentioned, there are technical errors that are just plain asinine- words missing, spelling errors, odd formats on the version, but as anal as I am, I wouldn't let that interfere with my ability to enjoy this story. Seriously guys, if you're smart enough to see the errors, you're smart enough to read around them. And just to be clear- EXACTLY HOW MUCH DID WE PAY FOR THIS KINDLE BOOK? Really, let's be fair.

BOTTOM LINE When I was done with this book- hours after I picked it up- the first thing out of my mouth was "SWEET Jesus." I LOVED this book. It was sexy, smart and nerve-racking. It wasn't perfect, but I honestly have NO IDEA how anyone could give this book 1 or 2 stars. I don't think we're the same species. I hope you like this book as much as I did, because not only could I not put it down- I couldn't catch my breath!

RECOMMENDATIONS (writing quality varies in the below series, as does the sexual & magical variation)
1. Vivian Arend's Wolf Signs Granite Lake Wolves, Book 1 fun, light, SWEET were-romance series. Slower paced.
2. Kelley Armstrong's shifting main character series with witches, demons, vamps and weres Bitten A Novel (The Otherworld)]005D
3. Anya Bast's [[ASIN0425216144 Witch Fire (Elemental Witches, Book 1)

4. Moira Rogers' basic werewolf romance series Cry Sanctuary Book 1 of Red Rock Pass series. Plots aren't always the most brilliant, but they're ok.
5. R.G. Alexander's steamy vampire/were/witch romance series Regina in the Sun (Children of the Goddess)
6. Kresley Cole's slightly more adventurous and intricate magical romance series (never mind the ridiculous title) A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, Book 1)
7. Renee Michaels' more sexually adventurous werewolf romance Her Chosen Wolf The Were Chronicles, Book 1
8. Sydney Somers' gargoyle spin on romance Primal Hunger Pendragon Gargoyles, Book 1
9. Christine Warren's, slightly inconsistent, but still worthwhile Wolf at the Door (The Others, Book 1) (skip the book on werecats, it has a weak female lead)
I picked up the series since each book was only $1. That probably should have been my first hint, but having picked up many excellent books free or at very low cost, I was hopeful. Don't get me wrong - I'm the type of person who will read the back of cereal boxes, Star magazine and just about anything written. I can flip from King and Koontz to Steinbeck and anything in between; I'm truly not a word snob. This series, however, deserves first place for writers in the "Just Because You Can, Doesn't Mean You Should" awards. I really gave the series an honest chance, even got into book #3, but finally just gave up.

I thought I had purchased books that were of a fairly good quality in the horror/thriller/fantasy genre. What I received were some smutty romance novels with some really low budget porn thrown in for good measure. The profuse poor spelling and editing were bad enough, but when I came across very graphic sexual verbiage that used nouns as verbs over and over again, I found myself laughing so hard I was distracted from the story itself, thin as it is.

Every heroine is of the "abuse me, rape me, love me" mold, the male characters (under the guise of being werewolves, of course) are basically the same person with different hair and eye color and clothing, and the plot lines are all variations on the same theme. The only thing positive I can say about each book was that each of them finally ended.
I'm trying to keep myself occupied while I'm waiting for new installments of other series. I can say this one kept me occupied-- but mostly picking out the problems with this novel. The writing is fairly amateurish-- but I hung in there to see where the author was going with the story. And yeah, this book went to places I wasn't expecting...but the delivery is clumsy, at best. Some of the early parts-- I won't spoil them for you-- are just plain stupid, and I get the impression that the author doesn't know much about how police departments and CSI units work-- or relationships, for that matter.

Since I'm still waiting for my other series to continue, I will follow up this read with the next in the series, but I do hope that author has matured as a writer...and has a better editor!
