My daughter stumbled across this series when she was looking for a book to report on in class. I must say, we are both pleased that she found this one!

Lone Wolf is the first of a series and it introduces the main character, Faolan. Faolan is a wolf pup which was abandoned shortly after birth due to a deformity. Fortunately for him, he is quickly discovered by a grizzly bear, who he names Thunderheart, who has recently lost her cub. She adopts him as her own and raises him in bear-fashion.

Unlike too many books written for this age group, Ms. Lasky breathes life into her characters. They do not read as "talking animals" but as sentient beings with very distinct personalities, thoughts and feelings - they really come alive on the pages. My daughter enjoyed this introduction to Faolan and his world so much that she is steadily reading the entire series.

I thought this book might be a bit too "young" for me, but instead was pleased to discover that it spans the gap between children and adults in winsome fashion. The version is nicely done, with some illustrations included. I was reminded of when I was a child and used to read countless books on animals. Being touched by the story, finding the imagination traveling along with the main character, and hoping for the best along the way. All in all, Wolves of the Beyond scores big in these areas of reading experience.

I'm 13 years old and I bought my first 2 Wolves of the Beyond series books at school. I never read books before this series. There is something about this books that really captured my attention. They are very interesting and with awesome life lessons hidden inside the stories. Now, I became a passionate reader! I bought my next 2 Wolves of the Beyond books here on with the help of my older brother, who ordered them for me. I'm truly glad he helped me with this, because now I can't stop reading this awesome series. I totally recommend Wolves of the Beyond series books!
I love this book. The characters are likeable, and the plot is engaging. The writing is lyrical and flows well. Although you don't get much closure at the end, it comes throughout the rest of the series. This is the "set the scene" book, but it still is wonderful. I was captivated with the world of Faolan and Thunderheart from page one, and I highly reccomend the whole series to anyone who likes wolves, fantasy, or a good story in general. This is the one series I've read over and over again. It combines adventure, animals, love, family, and mystery.

So, you probably can see that I absolutely adore this book. But I think that a buyer should be informed of the pros AND cons. So, here's a few things I didn't like quite as much. 1 I don't like being forced to buy all the books in a series to find out what happens. Well, a lot of mysterious things happen in the first couple books, but they aren't resolved until book 5, Spirit Wolf. It's like one big book that has been chopped in pieces. 2 A lot of the wolf words are hard to remember. I've read the series enough to know what a "malcadh", "gadderheal", "byrrgis", and everything else is, but that was a bit confusing at first. I'm not saying she should have taken out the wolf words completely, as they're a wonderful addition to the wolf lore, but I would have liked a key. A chart of the great chain would have been nice too, but since I have a I highlighted it so I could see it easily.

So, all in all, this is a fantastic book that I highly suggest you read. This was my favorite book for years, and it probably is. This is one that can probably be found at most libraries, but to me it was worth buying. Happy reading!
I bought this for my 11-year old niece along with other gifts for Christmas in 2012 and she loved the book so much that she sent me a special thank you note just for it. The series seems like a great way to teach kids how to value animals in an engaging way. It is a fictional series of course. It gives the animals human feelings and scenarios so that children can relate to animals better. The books seem well-written and interesting. I bought my niece the rest of the series this Christmas (2013) because she enjoyed the first one so much.

On a more personal note, my niece's parents are avid hunters. Our family has a Native American background, so while I do not have any problem with hunting or them teaching her how to hunt, I thought that these books would also help her learn to be respectful to the animal spirits and appreciate them for their contribution to her dinner table!
Bought for a 5th grader who LOVES animal series but is picky about the ones he loves. He is also a huge fan of the Warriors book series. So when a reviewer said their kid loved the Warriors and loved the Wolves of the Beyond, I bought the first three Wolves of the Beyond for my kiddo. He read all three in 3 days. Loves them.
