First one in the series that I have read, so don't know all the details of the Victorian Leeds detectives yet. But this is an English mystery treat. As the sufferagette movement sweeps thru Leeds, pushing for women to be given the vote, a body is found in the burned out train station. Flash fire destroyed a good section of building, and one employee dies. BUT wait, under a huge metal beam, is a middle aged woman, burned, dead, and with the beam melted onto her body. "Skin like silver". She is wife of well to do abusive businessman, who joined the Sufferage movement and left her husband. Of course a long list of possible suspects. But wait, there is an escaped lunatic on the loose in Leeds with a loaded rifle. He camps out in the woods and comes to town to kill.Well done, fun read. I want to read the rest of the series since I am caught up with the new Peter Lovesey series!

Skin Like Silver A Victorian police procedural A Tom Harper Mystery Chris Nickson 9780727885708 Books Reviews
Book number three in this Victorian era (1891) police procedural was a treat to read. The setting for this series is Leeds which makes a nice change from the more often used London in historical mysteries set in England. This was my first time reading anything written by Chris Nickson and this can very easily be considered a stand alone novel even though there is a relationship problem between two policemen from a previous case. Billy Reed had decided to transfer to the fire brigade but he and Detective Inspector Tom Harper are assigned to work together again after the terrible fire at the railway station. The body of a woman was found in the aftermath of the fire and it will take the skills of both men to identify her and find motive and killer.
Firmly entwined in the plotlines of this novel is the suffragist movement and the way the women were perceived by their friends, co-workers, and family members. There is a note from the author in the back of the book where he gives information concerning the historical events and people he worked into his story. The feel of the Victorian era is well developed so the overall feeling I came away with was one of satisfaction from reading the story. The police investigation worked along a logical path and information regarding the victim and the possible suspects was gathered by basic hard work through proper methods. None of the characters was so flamboyant or overpowering that they stole every minute of the story and I especially enjoyed that aspect of the construction of the novel. If you enjoy good characterization, good placement within a specific time period, and good police investigative processes, you will almost surely enjoy this novel.
I received an e-ARC of this novel through NetGalley and Severn House.
I really enjoyed this Historical Mystery. Detective Inspector Tom Harper has three mysteries to solve and is also supporting his wife as she becomes more involved with the Suffragists. The first mystery is to find the mother of a stillborn baby that was posted in the mail. In the rubble of the burned railway station the body of woman who was stabbed is found. A few days later a young woman is raped at the station. Are the mysteries related? The author does a very good job with the setting, the back streets of Leeds at the turn of the century. The story is also well researched with a nice blend of fiction and history. I really liked the characters. The mysteries were good and the solutions made sense. Enjoy this exciting historical mystery.
Good read.
Very well written historical mystery. As I read I could literally see the story. Looking forward to the next in the series!
I unashamedly love Chris. He keeps it simple and effective and yet oh so well.
Only problem is waiting for the next new release!!
These books just keep getting better and better. I love the mystery and crime overlaid on the history of Leeds
