Blackballed The Black and White Politics of Race on America Campuses Lawrence Ross 9781250079114 Books

This latest book by Lawrence Ross should be required reading for all university and college faculty and staff who care about their students and their campus climate. All Student Affairs professionals [practitioners, researchers & instructors] should read and teach from this history lesson to help them help make a better future in their campus community. He offers many poignant personal stories and historical perspectives necessary for intelligent crucial conversations with students, faculty, staff, parents and families. If educated folk are to serve and lead in our world, they need to know "the lion's version of history" (Achebe). I look forward to a follow up by Mr. Ross as campus activism increases, student demands become more widespread and higher education leaders work to become more proactive rather than reactive or remain complacent, "dealing with" or writing incidents off as "isolated." It is my hope that he will follow with some best practices, case studies and recommendations in the next publication. Certainly his speaking tour will help in that way and he will have many chances to gather more anecdotal and research based results. THANK YOU Lawrence Ross for opening so many eyes and challenging all good folk to step up, learn, think and do better.

Blackballed The Black and White Politics of Race on America Campuses Lawrence Ross 9781250079114 Books Reviews

With a deft hand and a voice that alternates between anger and exasperation, this book shines a light on an ongoing problem at university campuses persistent racism against African American students, most typically student to student. This book dives into history, pulling out example after example of systems designed to encourage second-class status for African-American students in institutions of higher learner, either at the societal or college level. This exclusion, varying from subtle to overt, has endured despite civil rights advances in other areas of society.

This book discusses the wide discrepancies between what institutions state they're going to do and what they actually accomplish. He very pointedly takes to task the overt racism -- even physical threats and violence -- white students continue to inflict on African-American students to this day. He further documents the new change sweeping college campuses, African American students actively, refusing to allow such racism to continue unchallenged. Not a new phenomenon, this book shows it is a now a renewed phenomenon, one this book expects to continue and grow stronger.

Critically, as reader, on top of the historical perspective, I would have loved a discussion of any facts and figures to demonstrate the problem is either getting worse, better, or staying the same. Has nothing been accomplished in the last 100 years to make things better? Are those accomplishments worthy of celebrating, can they be implemented in other schools, or are they just excuses to prevent seriously addressing racial issues? Microagressions, perceived or real minor insults in social interactions, are another area that I have great problem with. Freedom does allow people to be assholes to another, on top of when they are just being inconsiderate or ignorant. Lastly, some examples herein, while clearly racist, are clearly also protected speech, the kind of horrible things people, even young people, are legally allowed to say, even though distasteful and derogatory.

Yet, none of that can be used as excuses or justification for any kind of dismissal of the serious issues raised in this book. African American students have profoundly different experience of American society, one that, even when opening otherwise closed doors, proceeds to denigrate students for daring to walk through those doors. It part and parcel of a larger problem with society, the continuing legacy of racism and slavery that haunts our country. This book is strong recommend.
Must Read
Blackballed should be required reading for every university or college level administrator. Every person that works in Student Support Services, Housing and Residence Life, Student Life, Campus Activities, and Academic Advising should be made to read this book. Every professor, lecturer, and adjunct should read this book. All before sitting in their chair for the first time.
Lawrence Ross uses contemporary news stories, coupled with solid academic data, to illustrate the historical arcs of racism on America’s college campuses. While many conservative scholars will decry Ross and his work they are ultimately the ones that allow such pernicious racism to exist on college campuses. “African Americans are primarily the ones burdened with the task of fixing a race problem they didn’t produce or perpetuate, while white America continues to say, ‘I don’t see it.’” (Ross 2).
Ross’ interviews with victims of campus racism along with how the media portrays perpetrators of campus racism frame his points. While he scatters his own sarcasm and wit throughout the text, the base of the book is rooted in fact. X happened. This is what the people involved said. And then he dives in and tears it up. Ross does a really good job of disrupting conventional perspectives of campus racism.
If you work on the campus of a PWI, you need to encourage your boss to make everyone read this book. Seriously.
One of the most important books written since the mid '70s as we seek to understand how we as country have drifted so far away from the vision we had then of fairer civil rights for all citizens, but especially then for our African American brothers and sisters. Thank you, Mr. Ross!
