Taunting Destiny immediately picks up where Fighting Destiny left us. Full disclosure: I absolutely adored both these books. But that isn't going to help you decide whether to invest in this series, so let's talk.

If we have to assign a genre to this book, I guess paranormal romance comes the closest for me. But to call the complex relationship between Synthia and Ryder a romance, does not even scratch the surface of what is going on between them. It is raw emotion, desire, need, anger, the two of them relentlessly drawn to each other, often against their better judgment and common sense. It is fascinating to watch them falling in love with each other while they both admit it is the last thing they want. This book (and the previous one) have some dark moments, and a dark "hero". Some of his words and actions are cruel, along the lines of "sacrifice the few to save the many". But it is important to remember that Ryder is not human. Nor does he live by human rules. He is so powerful, no one has been able to challenge his decisions. That is until Synthia came along.

We found out in the first book that Synthia is not human, as she thought, but in fact Fae. This book really developed the nature/nurture struggle Syn is dealing with. She was raised human, she thinks and loves like a human. But now, there are a million Fae in her face, telling her what her destiny is, and what she must do to fix things. I thought the author did a great job communicating Syn's frustration level. She can't get a moment to stop and think about what she wants. People and events just keep pushing and pulling at her. We still aren't sure just how powerful Syn is and what she can do. I hope in the next book we finally get to see her hit her breaking point and put everyone in their place. Ryder included!

Speaking of Ryder, we are getting tantalizing hints about the beast that lurks within him. And are left to wonder just how much control Ryder has over him. Added to that, this book gives us lots of political intrigue. We learn more about the four castes of Fae and just how devious and back-stabbing they can be. No Tinker Bells in this story!

Now, while the world building is well done and draws you in, it would be remiss to not mention the heat level in this series. The sex is hot and explicit. But, and I know it is a cliché, it is important to their relationship development. No spoilers, but Ryder and Syn need that connection, not only to draw closer to each other, but also to learn things about themselves. Those deep, dark things that we try to hide from the light of day.

I am not a fan of first person POV. It tends to pull me out of the story. And I want to know what everyone is thinking, not just one character. This author, however, does it well. It is primarily written from Syn's POV, but Ryder and a few other folks jump in every once in a while. And the dialogue between characters fills in the blanks. And it pains me to say this, because cliffhangers make me insane, but this book ends with a whopper. Thank God the author is not making us wait a year between books.

So, if you are looking for boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl live HEA, don't buy this book. It's not that simple. But, if you like to immerse yourself in other worlds and cultures, want complex heroes and heroines who might not always do the right thing and aren't always nice guys, and you aren't offended by raw, intimate sex, well then, by all means, read this book!

Taunting Destiny The Fae Chronicles Book 2 eBook Amelia Hutchins Vera DC Digital Arts Photography Gina Tobin Reviews

WOW!!! What a story this was! I read this book in ONE day!! For me, that’s saying a lot. I can’t remember the last time that I did that. There was just so much happening. I just couldn’t stop reading, I was getting dizzy from all the turns this story took but it was never too much. I loved it all!

The story is again told mostly in Synthia’s POV but we also get Ryder’s POV now and then too. I really liked Ryder in this story. He’s still very alpha and dominant but he’s also more ‘gentler’ in some way and less colder. But fear not, he’s still a lethal and dangerous Fae warrior. In this story we really get to learn more about the Fae world and more secrets are being revealed.
One of the things that I liked a little less was the fact that the characters used a lot of curse words. For me it was sometimes a bit too much. The story gets also steamier and steamier.

The big advantage of discovering a series late, is that you don’t have to wait to read the next book!! I love that! Because this story ended with a big cliffhanger!!
I’m going to let my inner geek run loose for a minute. For me, Taunting Destiny is the Empire Strikes Back of the Fae Chronicles. The dark and emotional overtones that just settle on top of you while watching that movie is the same feeling I had while reading this. There was a hopelessness to it, a feeling of going against impossible odds and not seeing any way out. That movie reminded us that sometimes the good guys don’t win, and that’s exactly how this book felt. Just like with The Empire Strikes Back, I loved every minute of it.

Syn could not catch a break in this book. She’s fighting everything and everybody, even her own feelings. She took hit after hit and although occasional cracks would form, she just kept standing back up, but even she knew that at some point she would break.

She fought her destiny hard, maybe too hard. The way she fought against what everyone knew was inevitable, at times she came off as irrational and childish but I also completely understood why she was acting like this and my heart just broke for her.

Ryder made me want to rip his head off several times in this book. He has secrets and he’s not sharing. He doesn’t think he’s capable of loving, but he wants Syn with every fiber of his being and being the Fae he is, he’s hell bent on keeping her no matter what he has to do. As the secrets he’s been keeping come to light, especially the ones concerning Syn and some of the things he orchestrated in the past, Syn starts to wonder if she will ever be able to forgive him, and you just can’t really blame her.

Despite her feelings toward him, Syn needs Ryder to teach her how to survive as a Fae. The times they spent together alone brought them closer, but also served as a reminder that he’s fae through and through, and she was raised human. It’s easy to forget their fundamental differences, but unless they both keep that in mind they are doomed.

Even with all the issues, these two are freaking hot when it comes to the sexy times. I looked forward to each and every sex scene, and there are a lot of them. It doesn’t matter how much at odds these two are, when they get together all those feelings they deny are front and center and the already hot chemistry they have just explodes.

Just like the first book, just when you think things are finally going to go well for Syn and even Ryder, a huge twist hits and throws everything into disarray. The danger to Syn is increasing and it’s going to take everything Ryder has in him to keep her alive. Worlds need be saved which means sacrifices must be made, and those expected sacrifices are huge. Even on a reread, I knew what was coming, and it sent me reeling.

Taunting Destiny was a heartbreaking, mysterious, dark, emotional rollercoaster ride that had me constantly wondering how this could ever turn out well. I don’t think I will ever get tired of rereading this series as I impatiently wait for more.
